Billy Graham MNZM is a former New Zealand and Australasian light welterweight boxing champion who transformed his personal challenges into a mission to uplift at-risk youth. In 2006, he founded the Naenae Boxing Academy, a community-focused gym that instills discipline, respect, and resilience in young men, many of whom come from disadvantaged backgrounds. His impactful work earned him the 2011 Kiwibank New Zealander of the Year Local Hero award and, in 2020, he was appointed a Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit for services to youth and the community. Graham’s model has inspired the establishment of similar academies across New Zealand, all operating under the Billy Graham Youth Foundation
This award acknowledges those whose actions have had a significant and lasting impact in their communities. These quiet champions don’t wait for change – they create it. With conviction, care, and follow-through, our Local Hero recipients reflect the Aotearoa we all want to live in.
