Henare O’Keefe is a beloved community leader, youth advocate, and former Hastings District councillor known for his unwavering dedication to social justice and community upliftment. Often referred to as the “people’s mayor” of Flaxmere, he co-founded the U-Turn Trust and the Flaxmere Heroes initiative, which support at-risk youth and celebrate local role models. Henare’s compassionate approach—grounded in aroha (love) and service—has transformed countless lives and built stronger, safer communities. His lifelong service has earned him national recognition, including being named a Kiwibank Local Hero and receiving the Queen’s Service Medal.
These people who have made a positive difference in their corner of Aotearoa. They demonstrate selflessness and determination in their efforts to make a difference to their community – be it their local (geographical) community, or community of specific interest.
