Sir Eion Edgar (1945–2021) was a distinguished New Zealand businessman, philanthropist, and community leader whose influence spanned finance, education, health, and sport. He served as chairman of Forsyth Barr for two decades, chancellor of the University of Otago from 1999 to 2003, and president of the New Zealand Olympic Committee, among other prominent roles. A passionate supporter of medical research and youth development, he was the founding benefactor of the Edgar Diabetes and Obesity Research Centre and contributed to numerous charitable organisations, including Diabetes NZ, the Halberg Disability Foundation, and the Arts Foundation of New Zealand. Knighted in 2009 for services to education, business, and sport, Sir Eion’s enduring legacy is marked by his unwavering commitment to giving back to the community and improving the lives of New Zealanders.
