As part of Duncan Garner's DRIVE programme, Duncan read out the list of nominees for the 2017 New Zealander of the Year Awards Programme and invited people to call in and share their thoughts.

To date New Zealander of the Year Awards has received 185 nominations for the New Zealander of the Year Award which includes: 

  • 90 nominations for former president of the New Zealand Council of Trade Unions Helen Kelly
  • Other top nominated New Zealanders for 2017 Kiwibank New Zealander of the Year include:
    • Valerie Adams – shot put Olympian
    • Hurimoana Dennis – chairman of Te Puea Marae
    • Michelle Dickinson – director of Nanogirl Labs LTD
    • Kelly Dugan - founder of SmileDialNZ
    • Andrew Judd – New Plymouth mayor
    • Doctor Patrick Kelly – clinical director of Starship's child protection team
    • Bill Kerrison – for services to conservation
    • Duane Major & Adam Gard’ner – founders of Awaroa Beach crowdfunding campaign
    • Henare O’Keefe – for services to at-risk youth and family violence protection
    • Major Campbell Roberts - national director of social policy for The Salvation Army
    • Annah Stretton – founder of Reclaim Another Woman
    • Frances Valintine – founder of The Mind Lab
    • Rodney Wayne – for services to education in hairdressing
