For the
past 12 years Dr John Hyndman and Ivan Batistich have been developing a
compact, affordable, reliable and simple anaesthesia machine (the HYVAN) for
use in developing countries.
Whilst
doing volunteer work in the Pacific islands it became clear to Dr Hyndman that
there was a real need for such a machine he teamed up with engineer Ivan
Batistich. The prototype has been built and tested and the first manufacturing
run is now underway in Christchurch.
Both
Hyndman and Batistich see this venture as means to meet a need for a cheap ultra-reliable
anaesthetic machine and not for commercial gain.
In late
2015 Hyndman and Batistich received the World Anaesthesia Association Award for
innovation.
